                        Frequently Asked Questions about IELTS

     What is IELTS?

IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System.  It is used in Australia, Britain, Canada, New Zealand, and recently in the United States  to gain entry into tertiary studies and also for immigration/resident applications.

I don't understand why there are two tests?

There is an Academic and General Training IELTS test.  Both Academic and General IELTS have the same speaking and listening sub-tests, however the reading and writing tests are different.

For study purposes, most institutions (eg; university) require an Academic IELTS score (usually 6.0 or 6.5).  For Australian immigration applications, the General IELTS test is required, generally with an overall score around 5.0

Should I do General or Academic IELTS?

The Academic IELTS test is mostly used by students wishing to enter a study course.  General IELTS is mostly used for immigration purposes, or for anyone who wishes to test their English level.

How long does the test take?

2 hours 45 minutes.

There are 4 parts in the test:  Listening: 40 minutes, Reading: 60 minutes, Writing: 60 minutes, Speaking: 11-15 minutes.  (Speaking may possibly be done on another day)

How much does the test cost?

$310

     What level is the test?

Although the scores range from 1 - 9, the level of the test is aimed at people with an Intermediate or higher level of English.  As an example, you should be able to understand most of the English in this website if you are planning to take the IELTS test.

How often can I take the test?

The new rule is that you can take the IELTS test as many times as you like, whenever you like - (previously candidates had to wait 3 months before re-taking the test).  However, keep in mind that it takes time to improve the English skills required in the test.  Research indicates it takes around 3 months study to improve your score by one band point.

What is the best way to prepare for the test?

The best way to prepare for the test is to do as many different activities in English as possible.  Of course, you need to do specific IELTS study, but there are many other useful things you can do to help prepare.  For example:

  • Listening to the radio- especially news programs or discussions, will help with your listening and knowledge of current affairs, as will watching the news on television.
  • Reading educational articles in  newspapers and magazines or leaflets will improve your vocabulary, grammar and knowledge of topics.
  • Become aware of social issues and common topics of debate.
  • Take every opportunity to talk about yourself and share your opinions with a variety of people, and listen to what they have to say too.
  • Don't forget to look at the Useful Links for many more practice ideas!
